Herzultraschall (Echokardiographie)

Univ.Prof. Dr. Thomas Binder, Priv. Dozent Dr. Georg-Christian Funk

Cardiology is inconceivable without ultrasound investigation of the heart.

This is the most important imaging procedure in diagnostic investigation of the heart. With the aid of ultrasound technology, the heart can be visualized in action. The examination permits the following among other aspects:

  • Assessment of cardiac output (myocardial disease)
  • Evidence of thickening of the heart muscle (hypertrophy)
  • Evidence of myocardial infarction (coronary heart disease)
  • Evidence and assessment of the severity of a heart valve defect
  • Inflammation of the heart (heart muscle, valve, or pericardial sac)
